DP
Consulting can think of 4 excellent reasons why you should
ensure YOUR organization is accessible!
The Disability Discrimination
Act
Since October 2004 the DDA has applied
to all employers and providers of goods and services. So
what is your excuse for not complying? Compensation claims
in cases brought under this act are on the increase and last
year in excess of £2.7 million was awarded - that is an
average of over £33,000 per claim (source: Employment
Tribunal Services).
Moral Conviction
In the past, disability has been
deemed a medical issue - i.e. people are disabled by their
impairment. The more forward thinking view is that
disability is a social issue and that people are disabled by
their environment/society.
Employment and Skills
Studies suggest that the "skills
market" available to UK employers is shrinking. Official
figures estimate there are currently in excess of 10 million
disabled people living within the UK. This represents a
significant number of potential employees who may have the
necessary skills to help your organization succeed.
Economics
Lets look
at cold hard cash. The "blue pound" (the spending power of
the 10+ million disabled people in the UK) is reported to be
worth £80 billion per year (source: DRC). We think you would
agree this is substantial revenue that your organization
could pass to your competitors.
